Intec Pharma offers a unique solution to the pharmaceutical industry with its proprietary CR gastric-retentive drug delivery platform. Specifically, Intec is positioned to penetrate two important market segments: drugs with a narrow absorption window and drugs for local treatment of gastrointestinal conditions such as GERD, obesity and IBS. Additional markets include drug delivery of macromolecules and peptides.
Despite advances made in drug delivery technologies, current oral drug administration methods have only limited use for a variety of important drugs with distinct absorption characteristics. A "narrow absorption window" characterizes drugs that are selectively absorbed by specific carriers that exist only in the upper part of the small intestine. These specific carriers do not exist in the lower parts of the intestine. Drugs that pass this narrow absorption window will not be successfully absorbed, thereby undermining their functionality. In addition, because excessive doses are administered to compensate for the narrow absorption window, patients who must take these oral compounds suffer from a plethora of adverse side effects.

There are various drug classes that would benefit from an efficient gastric
retention system. These drugs:

•  Are absorbed mainly in the upper GI region
•  Are absorbed through transport mechanisms
•  Act locally in the GI tract
•  Are associated with significant ADR due to fluctuations in plasma levels
•  Are associated with ADR due to exposure in the distal GI region
•  Possess a unique pharmacokinetic profile

Examples (partial list):

•  Amino Acid Analogs (e.g., various drugs for CNS disorders)
•  Small Peptide Peptidomimetics (e.g. cardiovascular drugs)
•  Beta-lactams and Cephalosporins (antibiotics)
•  Nucleoside Analogs (e.g., various anti viral drugs)
•  Local gastrointestinal therapeutics (e.g., drugs for GI infections, obesity, IBS, IBD)
•  Drugs that are not administered orally (e.g., peptide based drugs)

Intec has identified a pipeline of approved drugs that, when combined with the
Accordion Pill, constitute various market opportunities, such as:

  •  New indications for existing drugs
•  Significantly improved efficacy and safety profile for drugs of choice
•  Innovative approach for the treatment of various GI disorders
•  Enabling of efficient PLCM
•  Enabling technology for acid/metabolically stable peptides
•  Synergy with certain systems for oral drug delivery of peptides
•  Possibility of enabling rescue of specific pipeline drug
